The welding catalogue that prints the numbers, not the adjectives.

Every entry is one line in a ledger: what the plate claims, what owners report, and a grade set against the other units in its own category. Open a line and you get the long write-up, the full specification and the thickness window the machine can actually carry.

A bay you could weld out of tomorrow

Not a podium of three machines that beat each other — one power source, one piece of protection and one tooling pick, each top of its own category. Buy these together and nothing is missing on day one.

Job sheet

Describe the joint in front of you. The sheet prints the settings to dial in first, then names the machines on file that can hold that output with headroom to spare.

Position

Starting points from standard rules of thumb — roughly one amp per 0.001″ of mild steel, corrected for alloy, process and position. Run a coupon and tune to the puddle; fit-up, plate temperature and gas coverage all move these figures.

Where the numbers come from

Short version: the grade is a standing, not a score out of a hundred, and it is only ever compared inside one category.

Graded against its own category

A helmet is never graded against a 350-amp multi-process machine. Each entry is placed against the other entries in its category, and the letter reflects where it lands — A+ for the top tenth, C for the bottom fifth.

The plate is the source

Output range, duty cycle, input voltage and mass are read off the manufacturer specification. Where a machine states a range, the thickness window on this site is derived from it rather than quoted from marketing copy.

Owners get a vote

Written owner reports and ratings shift standing on the things a spec sheet cannot show — whether the arc starts clean on painted steel, whether the manual is any use, whether the fan is loud enough to matter.

  • 1. Thickness windows assume mild steel, single pass, flat position. Aluminium runs hotter, stainless cooler — the job sheet corrects for both.
  • 2. Duty cycle is quoted at the amperage the manufacturer states it at, which is rarely the maximum output.
  • 3. Affiliate links appear on entry pages beside the buy button and are labelled there. They pay for the catalogue; they do not move a grade.
  • 4. The whole catalogue is generated from one dataset, so a correction is one edit and a rebuild rather than 199 hand edits.
